My
"Stained Glass Series" of tree portraits came about as a
response to a challenge I set myself. I love the movement of the growth in trees: how the branches weave and twine and reach and dance. The best time to see this is in winter, when the branches are bare, but painted winter trees often look a bit sad and cold when stripped of their living, moving foliage. This series is my response to that challenge - to paint the bare trees in winter, but to reveal their joy, movement, sensuous form and dynamic interaction with the negative spaces of the sky behind. These are portraits of actual living trees, most of them here on Vancouver Island. Watercolour, with its delicate and transparent vibrancy, seems to lend itself perfectly to this vision which highlights the interplay of light and life. (Maps to the location of the specific tree are affixed to the back of each painting.) Recently I have begun to paint a series of stained glass trees using acrylics on large canvases, with very happy results. After having done a number of these, I was moved then to apply a similar technique with trees in leaf, this time moving the stained glass effect of dynamic and varied colour from the sky to the foliage, while still being true to the form of the actual trees. |
